Research experience

  1. My research has involved in the biodegradation of toxic compounds by bacteria: (1) isolates and characterizes novel degrading strains; (2) determines the degrading pathways of compounds; (3) clones novel degradation genes or enzymes using ‘transposon mutagenesis’ and chromosome walking; (4) clones, overexpresses, and purifies the functional enzymes; (5) constructs recombinant for biocatalysis, bioremediation and synthetic biology.

  2. Methods used: (1) Isolation and purification of DNA, RNA, plasmids from environmental samples. (2) High throughput sequencing (phylogenetic and functional marker genes). (3) Quantitative PCR. (4) Phylogenetic analysis, probe and primer design. (5) Cultivation and selecttion of bacteria and mutants. (6) Gene transfer including  conjugation, transduction, classical transformation and electroporation, monitoring of gene transfer events. (7) Gene knockout and complementation. (8) Multivariate statistics. (9) Laboratory-based microbial model systems. (10) Bioinformatics and genomics. (11) Software on biological analysis, such as bioedit, omiga, mega, DNAman.
